The King James Version (KJV), commonly known as the Authorized Version (AV) or King James Bible (KJB), is an English translation of the Christian Bible for the Church of England. It commenced in 1604 and reached completion in 1611. Published by the King's Printer Robert Barker for the Church of England authorities' approval as the third official English translation. Preceded by the Great Bible under King Henry VIII and the Bishops' Bible in 1568.

Commissioned during the Hampton Court Conference by King James I in January 1604. The purpose was to address issues observed by the Puritans within the Church of England regarding previous translations. The translation emphasized conformity to the Church's ecclesiology and reflected its episcopal structure and belief in ordained clergy.

Carried out by a team of 47 scholars from the Church of England. Following the common practice at that time: the New Testament translated from Greek text and the Old Testament translated from Hebrew text while the Apocrypha drawn from Greek and Latin sources. Subsequently authorized by Act of Parliament for use in Epistle and Gospel readings replacing the Great Bible in the Book of Common Prayer (1662).

By the early 18th century became the standard English translation used in Anglican and Protestant churches. During this period displaced the Latin Vulgate as the primary scriptural source for English-speaking scholars. The most prevalent edition today aligns closely with Benjamin Blayney's revised text from 1769 at Oxford. Identified simply as the King James Version (KJV), particularly in the United States.
